Simple Guide: Long-Tail Cast-On Method
The long-tail cast-on is a common and versatile way to start a knitting project. Here’s how to do it:
Measure Your Tail: Pull out a tail of yarn approximately 3 times the width of your project (e.g., for 35 stitches, about 20 inches). This will be your “long tail.”
Make a Slip Knot:
Form a loop with the yarn, placing the long tail over the working yarn (yarn connected to the ball).
Pull the tail through the loop to create a slip knot.
Place the slip knot onto one of your knitting needles and pull gently to secure it. This counts as your first stitch.
Hold the Yarn:
Hold the needle with the slip knot in your right hand.
With your left hand, spread the two strands (tail and working yarn) apart.
Place your thumb around the long tail and your index finger around the working yarn, forming a triangle with the yarn.
Create the Stitches:
Move the needle down and through the loop around your thumb.
Wrap the needle around the yarn on your index finger.
Pull the needle back through the loop on your thumb and drop the loop off your thumb.
Pull the yarn tight to form a stitch.
Repeat: Continue the process until you have the desired number of stitches on your needle.
Check Tension: Make sure the stitches are not too tight or loose. You should be able to slide them comfortably along the needle.
Tip: Practice the long-tail cast-on a few times to find the right length of yarn and tension. It’s a foundational technique you’ll use often in knitting!
